Cain and Near
WHERE: Café de la Paix
SUMMARY/WARNING: Because Near asked Cain if he would escort him to the Masquerade, and their conversation lead, eventually, to the two of them meeting. :D
RATING: PG... for now. >.>

Near wondered for the fourth time if he had chosen the right clothing for the occasion, as he closed and locked the door to his room. If I go inside to choose something else, I will be late, he thought as he glanced at the watch on his wrist. Twirling at his hair, Near walked to the exit of the Pavillion.

It was a cloudy day, but pleasant enough to walk through the streets of Amsterdam. Near looked down at himself, as if checking everything was still in order with his clothing. He had chosen dark shoes and pants, a white shirt and a jacket, which was just as dark as his pants. He liked the contrast. The clothes were a little over sized, but not too much; bigger than the clothes he should wear, but still not as large as his usual white pajamas.

Still twirling at his hair, Near checked the time after he had glanced at the café that Cain had proposed. 12.56. Good, he had arrived four minutes before the scheduled time. He noticed someone outside the building, and, assuming it was who he was looking for, Near walked up to him, and asked in a shy voice.

"Mister Cain?"

Cain was always either early or prompt. Never late. A gentleman, as he was, was never late. He held an umbrella in one hand, a bouquet of fresh red roses in the other. A modest suit, as modest as an aristocrat could be, and a humble expression. He was awaiting his little 'date' for the Masquerade, golden-green eyes scanning the city. He took note of the cloudy weather before leaving, having one of his servants bring him an umbrella for the day out.

He took note of everyone walking nearest him, remembering their features just like the detective he was. Cain sighed softly, blinking when he heard his name being softly said. His eyes moved to look at the shorter male in front of him, letting a smile slowly dance across his face.

"And you would be Near, I would suspect," Cain softly replied, moving to put the umbrella in the same hand as the bouquet of roses. His maneuvered to take one of Near's free hands, pressing his lips against it gently as he looked up. He quickly pulled back, bowing as he offered the bouquet to Near. "A pleasure to meet you in person."

Near felt strangely exposed as Cain looked at him and smiled. He did not know if it was because of his unusual eye colour, which seemed to try to penetrate his thoughts, or because of the way the other man had looked at him and smiled. It made him feel slightly uncomfortable, but he was careful not to let it show.

"You are correct," he said in reply, with a small nod. Near noticed the bouquet properly for the first time, but before he could think more about the matter, Cain had kissed his hand. Near blinked, speechless for a moment, and accepted the roses. The warmth he suddenly felt on his face told him he was blushing, and he cursed his surprise for slowing down his thoughts. "It's a pleasure to meet you, as well," he replied softly, fighting the sudden urge to twirl at his hair nervously. He had expected Cain to be polite and charming, but not quite like this. No one had ever treated him like this before.

Near lifted the bouquet slightly and smelled the roses, closing his eyes for a moment. They had a pleasant, delicate scent. It had been a while since he ever touched a rose. He used the roses as an excuse not to look at Cain for a second; he was at a loss of what to do. Should he suggest entering the Café and finding a table, or would Cain prefer to do that himself?

He relaxed slightly, tilting his head in the way toward the door. "Shall we?" Cain suggested, trying his best to appear calm instead of anxious. There was always an odd feeling in meeting someone new, someone he didn't know. He, of course, wasn't from Amsterdam. England was his home country, and everyone definitely acted different in England. He was..."royalty", being an Earl. At least, it felt like royalty. In Amsterdam, a monarchy didn't exist. So being an Earl had no purpose, and nobody knew his surname.

Though that didn't matter. Having acquaintances, and potential friends, was probably all he could ask for. Something money couldn't necessarily purchase. "I do hope I'm not overdoing it. I have a habit of being overly polite. Most find it unappealing," Cain noted, sighing and pocketing one hand, holding the umbrella still as he grinned modestly. He was waiting on the other to give him permission to guide him into the café, and when he did, Cain would promptly hold the door open for him.

As he noted, he was a bit too polite. But most he encountered seem to like it, only the other rich people didn't. Females, and some feminine males, swooned at his romantic ways, and he could only hope to get Near into warming up to him. Cain could feel the tension, and he only wished for the other to feel relaxed and at ease with him. Even if he was a noted detective, as well as avid poison collector, he had his charming traits. Which, of course, he would use to his secretive advantages.

Near nodded at his question. "Yes." While he was nervous, he was also very curious as to how their meeting would go. Should he try to behave more naturally, close to his real personality, or should he act instead? He didn't know that, yet. But Near would observe Cain, and try to analyze him enough to know what he wanted from him, from this meeting.

He shook his head at Cain's words. "It's all right. I must admit, though, I was never treated in such a way before." Near smiled a little, hoping it would break the awkward tension between them, and dispel his nervousness. "Although I suppose you noticed that already, given my reaction."

A warm smile and Cain went over to hold open the door to the café, watching as a few people walked out while he held it open. A short laugh escaped his lips as he heard Near's words, quickly stopping and holding out a hand for the other. "Then, it shall be an honor to be able to treat you as such, Near. I believe everyone should be treated with respect, and if they aren't, it's a true shame."

Cain he looked up and sighed, eyes gazing at the sky for a quick moment, before returning to look at Near with a tender expression. "It looks as if it is about to rain...ah, perhaps you would like to go back to my abode after? Until the rain surpasses, or if you would wish to leave early. Merely a suggestion~."

Near tilted his head slightly. Cain was an odd person; interesting, but still a little odd. It was very uncommon to see someone so polite, these days. "Thank you," he said as he took Cain's hand and squeezed it lightly, wanting to show how thankful he really was. It would be nice to be treated that politely, even if it was for the sole purpose of being taken to bed after.

He felt himself blushing a little, yet again, when he noticed Cain's expression. He could not help but wonder how much of it was a façade and how much was real, or if there was anything real at all. "Perhaps," he said in a quiet voice, smiling shyly as he looked away. It was an act, this time; he needed to mask the sudden nervousness he felt at the idea of being alone with a stranger in a place he didn't know at all, and where that stranger would have full advantage over him. He had taken measures to warn L if something happened, but he hoped things didn't have to come to it. When he looked back at Cain, he felt a little more in control, even though he couldn't quite dispel his paranoia. His lips remained in a small smile, and even though his voice was still a little shy, he was feeling more playful, teasing. "Do you have anything in mind, Mister Cain?"
